A HOLIDAY IN THE VILLAGE
Judaism, christianity and islam coexist here in peace. The inhabitants prevent real estate speculation with their own bodies. The scent is intoxicating. Between the mountains of Judea lies a picturesque village, you know it as the Einkerem neighborhood |

Einkerem looks as though taken from a children´s fairy tale. It is the last village remaining in the country that combines traditional arab buildings with monumental european architecture. For years the place hasn´t changed at all: seven churches and monasteries, eight synagogues and one mosk turn Einkerem into a melting pot for the three religions. The local inhabitants fight ferociously to protect its uniqueness, authenticity and grandiose history. With their bodies they have prevented the massive construction of 1,500 housing units that would have forever changed the places´character

...Einkerem Legend
In order to raise the consioussness to our struggle, i began to guide groups in the neighborhood sites. I believed that if we turned Einkerem to a brand name, it would be easier to protect it´s character... |

The neighborhood I came to picturesque Einkerem in 1975. Ever since i recall i have had a great longing for this neighborhood. it always filled me with energies and a sense of wholeness. I have always lived in the same house. In the late 1990´s there was a plan to expand Einkerem by building in every free space and damage the nature and the nature and natural atmosphere all around. I volunteered to be chairman of the neighborhood committee alongwith many good people and bodies such as the agency for nature preservation and the agency for preservation of sites. You must know they wanted to do horrible things here. the area of the Pundak was to be transformed into a high rise hotel. After several years our struggle was successful. We reached the supreme court and proposed an alternative program for the monstrous construction enterprises. I am proud to tell that parts of our plans were adopted by the district committee, which demonstrates that if there is a will everything is possible
Einkerem Legend
In order to raise the consioussness to our struggle, i began to guide groups in the neighborhood sites. I believed that if we turned Einkerem to a brand name, it would be easier to protect it´s character. although I did not have any previous background, I found out that the task was not to big for me. I studied the routes at night, and thanks to my studies of theatre from my university days i created guidance that included creativity and originality. At the core were stories of the neighborhood folklore. I remember that in the beginning I wasn´t taken seriously. The Einkerem veterans said there was no chance that I would be able to tell them anything new with my guidance and stories, but at the end of the guidance they remained open mouthed... within a short time demand for the tours kept growing and i went to finish a course as a tour guide. Today I operate a centre that offers guided tours, trips and events with added value in all parts of Jerusalem. We organize activities for private groups, womens´ trips and other attractions. Our secret, in one sentence, is that we touch peoples´ sentiments.
A memory I was asked to organize a one and a half hour event in honour of Jean Philippe Cortoit, president of world microsoft, who came to the city for a tightly scheduled visit. In a short inquiry we made we found out that he was catholic so i decided to take him to the Church of the Sepulchre. I want reveal how, but inspite of the church closing at evening time, I managed to obtain a permit to open it especially for him. This was an enchanting and extraordinary event, and he didn´t stop telling how much he enjoyed it.

Garlic, pepper and olive oil - Chagit Evron
A gastronomic tour of the restaurants and small, renovated food stores of Mahne Yehuda market in Jerusalem reveals a world of scents, flavours and even fine food for a reasonable price

No other city in the world provokes contrasting flavours in me like Jerusalem. Like the sweet-spicy flavour of Jerusalem Kugel, such is the taste of the city. Sad-happy. At the city entrance I experience a sense of melancholy mingled with spiritual elation, and I wish to cuddle onto her alienating stones.
If Jerusalem is a microcosmos of the world, then the Mahne Yehuda market is a microcosmos of Jerusalem. It not only is the beating heart of the city, and the place where every politician comes to check the political pulse along with a tomato or two. In recent years Mahne Yehuda market has become an exciting, cosmopolitan gastronomic centre, one that can compete without a sense of inferiority with the markets of Barcelona or Paris, where people sit in the midst of this colorful happenning, sipping a drink and eating from small,
coquetish dishes, - all for a very reasonable price
